August 1981, and Animage gives its cover to Hayao Miyazaki — four years before Studio Ghibli existed, and six months before this same magazine began serialising Nausicaä. The feature traces what it calls the genealogy of his animated films, back through Lupin and Heidi to the work he did as a young in-betweener. Around it, the ordinary business of a monthly: Akira Toriyama drawing Arale surfing a Hokusai wave, pencil character sheets, a farewell to Galaxy Express 999, readers' artwork printed at the size of postage stamps. It is strange to read a magazine treating Miyazaki as a promising director rather than a national institution. The tone is enthusiastic and provisional, which is precisely what makes it worth keeping. Tokuma Shoten, 590 yen. Japanese text, out of print.
