Tezuka took his pen name from a beetle. As a schoolboy he added the character for insect to his given name, and the seal on this cover still carries it. The catalogue opens with the notebooks that earned the name: insects drawn from life, labelled, arranged with a naturalist's patience. It then moves through the character designs — animals and invented creatures set out in rows like a field guide — and long stretches of manga printed in red monochrome. Sorting a life's work under headings such as humans and science could have flattened it. Instead the sections make an argument: that the boy cataloguing beetles and the man drawing Astro Boy were doing one thing, not two. Asahi Shimbun. Japanese text, out of print.
