Yasuyuki Inoue built the cities that Godzilla destroyed. For four decades he was Toho's art director for special effects — the miniature streets, the water tank, the power station that has to read as concrete at one twelfth scale. This catalogue, from the centenary exhibition, reproduces his working drawings: pencil elevations of buildings that exist only to be crushed, watercolour concept art, and photographs of the sets under construction with the crew still in shot. What stays with me is a line quoted here. The camera would not capture every detail on the set, Inoue said, but the details were needed to make the image convincing. He spent a career dressing rooms nobody would ever look at directly. Kinema Junposha. Japanese throughout, with the principal essays also set in English.
