Everyone who has seen Akira or Ghost in the Shell remembers the cities. Almost no one remembers looking at them. Background art is built to be absorbed rather than examined; it carries the weight of a world while the eye follows something else. Stefan Riekeles, a German curator, spent years persuading Japanese studios to open their archives. This book is the result: layout drawings, colour scripts and finished backgrounds from eight films made between 1988 and 2009. Seen apart from the animation, they are disorienting. These are architectural drawings for buildings nobody was ever meant to enter. What stays with me is how much labour went into things the audience was never supposed to notice. A rusted pipe. A stained wall. A street sign in a language most viewers cannot read. Precision spent entirely on the periphery. Japanese text, with the images doing most of the work.
