A book about how Japanese books are made, specific to the point of being a manual. Each entry lists the typeface, the paper by name, the printing method and the binding, next to photographs taken at angles that show the thickness of the thing. Shin Sobue's studio is here — the same Cozfish whose monograph sits elsewhere on this shelf — alongside the designers whose work you meet constantly in Japanese bookshops without ever being told who did it. What I like is the flatness of the presentation. Nobody is profiled at length. The work is laid out like a case of specimens and the argument is left to accumulate: that paper stock and trim size carry meaning as surely as the words do. Seibundo Shinkosha.
