Shin Sobue designs books that misbehave. Type drifts off the baseline. Page numbers fall out of sequence. Printing errors that any other designer would correct are kept, enlarged, made the point. His studio, Cozfish, has spent three decades treating the book as an object with a body rather than a neutral container for text. This volume documents that work, and it is a strange thing to hold: a book about books that keeps proving its own argument through paper stock, binding and ink. The easy reading is that this is contrarian for its own sake. I think it is closer to the opposite. Sobue appears to be asking what a printed book can do that a screen cannot, and answering physically rather than in words. PIE International, 2016.
