An issue of a design magazine given over entirely to sound. The composer Toshi Ichiyanagi leads it, and the register shifts fast: an essay by Yoshio Kataoka arguing that sound is unmistakably culture, graphic scores that look like weather charts, and a survey of rock sleeves with Zappa and Pink Floyd reproduced in grids. Ears Cleaning, the cover calls it, in type large enough to pass for a manifesto. Designing for the ear was an odd subject for a design quarterly in 1976, and the issue knows it. That is why it holds up: nobody involved is pretending the boundary had already been settled. Bijutsu Shuppansha, No.14, summer 1976. Japanese text, out of print.
