Kurashi no Techo took no advertising. That one decision shaped everything else: it could test a manufacturer's kettle and print what it found, and it could give ten pages to a subject with no commercial interest at all. This issue moves from stuffed peppers photographed against plain cloth, to blouses laid flat, to the floor plan of a thirty-two square metre flat with the furniture drawn in — and then to documentary photographs of women refusing to leave land taken for a firing range. The recipes and the protest sit in the same magazine at the same weight, laid out by the same hands. Very little published since has managed that. Kurashi no Techo Sha, July–August 1981.
